aluminium oxide undercoat is a special type of primer that not only prepares aluminium surfaces for a durable topcoat but also provides the material with a protective layer. It is particularly important when the aluminium is in contact with acidic chemicals, such as salts. In such cases, the protective layer ensures that the aluminium does not come into direct contact with the acids and thus cannot be damaged.

This type of primer can be used to paint a large variety of different metals, but it is especially suitable for nonferrous metals like aluminium. It is not recommended to apply this type of undercoat on ferrous metals, such as iron and steel. To determine whether or not a surface is ferrous, you can use a magnet. Ferrous metals will stick to a magnet, while nonferrous metals will not.

Before you can apply an aluminium oxide undercoat, the surface should be clean and free of any grease or oil. This can be achieved by using a degreasing solution. This also helps to make sure that the aluminium paint adheres properly.

Anodized aluminum is a special type of aluminium that has been pretreated by means of an electrochemical process. During this process, an aluminium oxide layer is more or less fused to the aluminium. This layer is extremely durable and protects the material against many external influences. Painting anodized aluminium is not as easy as it would be on untreated aluminium. However, it is still possible. The trick is to remove the aluminium oxide layer in a very specific way. This can be done using a commercially available pipe cleaner that contains 20% sodium hydroxide.
