Aluminium oxide is an inert, odourless, white, crystalline chemical compound with the formula Al2O3. It occurs naturally as the mineral corundum (varieties of which make ruby and sapphire), and it is produced by decomposition of aluminium chloride or magnesium chloride under high temperatures. It is the most common of several aluminium oxides, and it is used in the manufacture of aluminium metal, abrasives, and refractory materials. Its high melting point, hardness, and chemical stability make it an excellent refractory material for lining furnaces, kilns, incinerators, reactors, and crucibles.

The aluminium oxide raw materials cement is one of the most important components of concrete. It imparts strength to the concrete and prevents cracking by slowing down the chemical reaction with water in cement. It should be present in a quantity of up to 2%. Excess of it will render the concrete unsound.

Cement is a complex mixture of different chemical ingredients. Each of these constituents has a unique chemical formula. Moreover, these chemicals have an impact on the mechanical properties of the cement. For example, the use of aluminium oxide nanofibers can significantly improve the compressive strength of cement composites. Nevertheless, it is unclear how the addition of these particles will influence the other important constituents of cement such as gypsum, fly ash and limestone. It is also not known whether the use of these nanomaterials will have an impact on the rheology of concrete.
